Coverage Types for Contractors

Commercial General Liability (CGL)Essential

Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage at job sites. Required by most general contractors and project owners before you can start work. Minimum $2M recommended.

Contractor's Equipment & ToolsCritical

Your auto policy (IRCA) does NOT cover tools or equipment. If tools are stolen from your van or damaged on site, you need this separate coverage. One of the most common gaps we see.

Commercial PropertyStandard

Protects your office, warehouse, stored materials, and business contents from fire, theft, and other covered perils.

Commercial Auto / FleetRequired

Covers trucks, vans, and trailers used on the job. Personal auto policies do not cover vehicles used for business. Fleet options available for 5+ vehicles.

Professional Liability (E&O)Recommended

Protects against claims of faulty design, incorrect installations, or professional negligence that causes a client financial loss. Especially important for design-build contractors.

Wrap-Up / CCIP / OCIPProject-Specific

Covers all contractors on a single project under one policy. Required by some large commercial or government projects. Ask your broker if this applies to your bids.

Surety BondsContract Req.

Bid bonds, performance bonds, and payment bonds are often required for government and large commercial contracts. These guarantee your work will be completed as agreed.

Your auto policy does NOT cover your tools.

This is one of the most common coverage gaps for contractors. If your tools are stolen from your van or damaged on a job site, your commercial auto policy will not pay for them. You need a separate Contractor's Equipment or Inland Marine policy. Ask your broker.
