Coverage Types for Electricians

Commercial General Liability (CGL)Essential

Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage from your work. If faulty wiring causes a fire or someone is injured on your job site, CGL covers damages and legal defense. Most GCs require a minimum of $2M.

Professional Liability (E&O)Highly Recommended

Protects against claims of faulty design, improper installations, or code violations that result in financial loss. If your wiring design causes an issue after the job is done, E&O covers the claim.

Contractor's Equipment & ToolsSeparate Policy

Your auto policy (IRCA) does NOT insure your tools. Electrical testing equipment, meters, and specialized tools are expensive targets. You need a separate Contractor's Equipment / Inland Marine policy.

Commercial AutoRequired

Covers your work vans and trucks. Personal auto policies do not cover vehicles used for business. Remember: when you lend your vehicle, you lend your insurance.

Installation FloaterRecommended

Protects electrical materials (panels, wiring, fixtures) stored at a job site before installation is complete. Covers theft, fire, and vandalism.

Wrap-Up / CCIPProject-Specific

Some large commercial or government projects require all trades to be covered under a single wrap-up policy. Ask your broker if this applies to your bids.

Risks Unique to Electricians

Fire from Faulty Wiring

Electrical fires are among the most serious and costly claims.

Electrocution & Shock

Workplace injuries from live circuits carry high liability.

ESA Code Violations

Non-compliance can lead to fines and professional liability claims.

Expensive Tool Theft

Meters, testers, and power tools are high-value targets.

Completed Operations

Wiring issues discovered months later can still be your liability.

Vehicle Dependency

Your business stops if your van is off the road.

Electrical work carries massive liability.

A single electrical fire caused by faulty workmanship can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage, injury claims, and legal costs. Make sure your CGL limits are adequate for the projects you take on -- $2M minimum for residential, $5M+ for commercial.

Why insurance matters:

Your auto policy does NOT cover your tools.

Electrical testing equipment, meters, and specialized tools stolen from your van or damaged on site are not covered by your IRCA. You need a separate Contractor's Equipment policy.
