Before You Cancel -- Read This First

Cancelling your insurance policy has real consequences. Before you decide, make sure you understand these critical points.

Coverage Gap Warning

Critical

Never cancel your existing policy until your new coverage is confirmed and in effect. A gap in insurance can lead to higher premiums, difficulty getting insured, and legal consequences if you drive uninsured.

Short-Rate Cancellation Fees

Financial

Most insurers charge a short-rate penalty when you cancel mid-term. This means you will pay more than the pro-rata amount for the time you were insured. The earlier in your term you cancel, the higher the penalty.

Administrative Fees

Financial

In addition to short-rate penalties, most insurance companies charge an administrative fee (typically $25-$50) for processing a mid-term cancellation.

Future Rate Impact

Long-Term

A gap in coverage history can lead to significantly higher premiums when you try to get insurance again. Insurers view lapses in coverage as a risk factor.

Legal Requirements

Mandatory

In Ontario, you are legally required to maintain insurance on any registered vehicle. Driving without insurance can result in fines of $5,000-$50,000, licence suspension, and vehicle impoundment.

How to Cancel Your Policy

Whether you are switching providers, selling your vehicle, or moving out of Ontario, here is the step-by-step process to cancel your insurance policy properly.

1.Contact Your Broker

Call or email Rocket Insurance with your cancellation request. We will walk you through the process, explain any fees, and help you understand your options.

2.Secure New Coverage First

If you are switching providers, make sure your new policy is active before cancelling the old one. We can help coordinate the transition dates so there is no gap.

3.Provide Required Information

You will need your policy number, the effective cancellation date, and the reason for cancellation. If switching, provide proof of your new coverage.

4.Confirm the Effective Date

Your cancellation will be processed on the date you specify. You will receive written confirmation from your insurance company.

5.Settle Any Outstanding Balance

Any short-rate penalties, admin fees, or remaining balance will be calculated and communicated to you. Refunds (if applicable) are typically issued within 4-6 weeks.

Alternatives to Cancelling

Before you cancel, consider these alternatives that could save you money without the penalties and risks that come with cancellation.

Adjust Your Coverage

Lower your coverage limits or increase your deductibles to reduce premiums. Your broker can identify which changes save the most.

Bundle Your Policies

Combining auto and home insurance with the same provider often results in multi-policy discounts of 5-15%.

Review Available Discounts

You may qualify for discounts you are not currently receiving -- winter tires, alarm systems, claims-free history, group rates.

Switch at Renewal

If you can wait, switching at your policy renewal date avoids short-rate penalties entirely. We can start shopping rates 30-60 days before renewal.

Payment Plan Adjustment

If cash flow is the issue, switching from annual to monthly payments or adjusting your payment date may help.

Common Cancellation Questions

How much does it cost to cancel my insurance mid-term?

It depends on how far into your policy term you are. Insurers use a short-rate table that charges a higher percentage early in the term. For example, cancelling 3 months into a $2,400 annual policy could cost $150-$300 in penalties plus an admin fee. Use our calculator above for an estimate.

Can I cancel my policy at any time?

Yes, you can cancel at any time. However, cancelling mid-term typically results in short-rate penalties. The most cost-effective time to switch is at your renewal date, when there are no cancellation fees.

What is the difference between short-rate and pro-rata cancellation?

Pro-rata means you pay only for the exact time you were insured. Short-rate adds a penalty on top of that. Most insurer-initiated or flat cancellations are pro-rata. Most client-initiated mid-term cancellations are short-rate.

Will I get a refund if I cancel?

Possibly. If you have paid more than the earned premium plus penalties and fees, you will receive a refund. If you have paid less, you may owe a balance. Your broker will provide the exact numbers before you finalize.

What happens if I just stop paying my premiums?

Do not do this. Your insurer will cancel your policy for non-payment, which goes on your insurance record. This makes it significantly harder and more expensive to get insurance in the future. Always cancel properly through your broker.

How do I decide on a coverage start date?

The coverage start date is the date you would like your new coverage to start and needs to be within 90 days. For auto, both your cancellation date and coverage start date should be the same to make sure there is no gap.
