Coverage Types for Plumbers
Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage. If a pipe bursts during your work and floods a client's home, CGL covers the damages. Most GCs require a minimum of $2M.
Standard CGL policies typically EXCLUDE pollution-related claims. Plumbers working with waste lines, septic systems, or backflow valves face pollution risks that require this separate coverage. Covers cleanup, contamination, and related lawsuits.
Your auto policy (IRCA) does NOT insure tools or equipment. Specialized plumbing tools (cameras, jetters, locators) are expensive to replace. You need a separate Contractor's Equipment / Inland Marine policy.
Protects materials and fixtures (pipes, hot water tanks, fixtures) stored at job sites before installation is complete. Covers theft, fire, and vandalism of materials from delivery to completion.
Covers your work vans and trucks used to transport tools and materials. Personal auto policies do not cover vehicles used for business purposes.
Protects against claims of faulty workmanship, incorrect installations, or negligent advice that causes a client financial loss. Covers legal defense even if the claim is unfounded.
Compensates for lost income if your business is temporarily shut down due to an insured loss, such as a fire at your shop.
Risks Unique to Plumbers
Water Damage Claims
Accidental flooding is the #1 risk for plumbers.
Pollution & Sewage
Waste line work and septic systems carry pollution liability.
Expensive Tool Theft
Cameras, jetters, and locators are costly targets.
Vehicle Dependency
Your business stops if your van is off the road.
Contract Requirements
GCs and property managers require proof of insurance.
Completed Operations
A leak after you leave can still be your liability.
Pollution liability is NOT included in standard CGL.
If you work with waste disposal lines, septic systems, or any situation where sewage or contamination could occur, you need a separate Pollution Liability policy. Without it, a pollution-related claim will be denied by your CGL insurer.
Your auto policy does NOT cover your tools.
Plumbing tools and equipment stolen from your van or damaged on site are not covered by your IRCA (commercial auto policy). You need a separate Contractor's Equipment policy.
