Detailed Breakdown: Each Coverage Type

What is it?

Water that backs up through your drains, toilets, or sump pump due to an overwhelmed sewer system, blocked pipe, or pump failure.

What it typically covers:

  • Damage to flooring, walls, and belongings in your basement
  • Cleanup and restoration costs
  • Replacement of damaged personal property

What is typically NOT covered:

  • Damage from gradual leaks or poor maintenance
  • Backup caused by your own negligence (e.g. tree roots you knew about)
  • Usually has a sub-limit (e.g. $10,000-$50,000) -- check your policy

Important: This is the MOST common water claim in Ontario. Most standard policies do NOT include it -- you must add it as an endorsement. If you have a basement with belongings, this coverage is essential.

Don't assume you're covered for all water damage.

Many homeowners believe their standard policy covers all types of water damage -- it does not. Sewer backup and overland water must typically be added separately, ground water seepage is rarely covered at all, and even burst pipe coverage comes with conditions (like maintaining heat in winter). Check with your insurance broker or provider to review exactly what your policy includes. If youdon't have a broker, call us at 416-628-1962 for a free policy review.
